EAT AND SWIM AT A PLACE ROBINSON CRUSOE WOULD BE JEALOUS OF

The Adriatic Sea has more than 1200 islands and we are extremely lucky to be living near two very special ones. If anybody would do a list of top islands in the Adriatic (or even in the Mediterranean) Hvar and Brač would probably be atop.
Despite being very popular both Brač and Hvar have hidden spots that we love to share with our guests. Like secret beaches with crystal clear water located in a lovely bay that resembles the charming beauty found in the Alex Garland/Danny Boyle book/movie The Beach.
Or restaurants that work without electricity and running water and yet cook some of the most delicious meals we ever tasted. And we tasted a few, trust us. These kinds of places do not have a menu, they depend on nature. That is why they serve only freshly caught fish and the finest meat cuts available from the local farm.

The way to order it is simple: first order some local aperitif like brandy made from carob tree, cherry, quince or travarica (herb brandy). After this ask your host what is the best fresh fish they have at the moment. If you are lucky, zubatac (tooth fish) will be available. Zubatac is a fish that commanded respect throughout history. It was mentioned by the likes of Aristotle, Athenaeus and Claudius Aelianu. The Dalmatian zubatac was considered across the Mediterranean as the best one, especially tasty when prepared in true local fashion with wine and saffron. Zubatac is a true delight that shows how special the Adriatic Sea is.
This feast would be nothing without satisfying the sweet tooth. Local sweets and pastries like rožata (the original Crème brûlée!), rafioli, Makarana cake or simple pancakes with homemade jam are some of the options usually available. Try all of them, if possible!
