CYCLE THROUGH HISTORY DOWN THE ROAD NAPOLEON BUILT

Cycling is the sport of the strong-willed and physically able ones. After all, the early Tour de France racers would, once they finished a steep climb, raid the bars in search of alcohol to ease the pain in their muscles.
Today, cycling is a beautiful way to experience a destination. Tour de Croatia passes through Makarska, Brela and across one part of the nearby Biokovo mountain, which is astonishing in its massive beauty. One of the best bike trails in Croatia is also in our area, on the road from Makarska towards Zadvarje.
This cycling route is actually an old road the great Napoleon Bonaparte built during his relatively brief tenure in this area, which lasted between 1808-1813. The road itself is truly remarkable, even by today’s standards. The architect Frane Zavoreo made sure that no rise exceeded 6% making it equally pleasant for horse and cart riding as well as walking and cycling. This road, under the name French Road, is also listed in the Register of Cultural Goods of Croatia!

To provide such a great experience, the architect and the construction workers must have been inspired by the great views this part of Biokovo offers. From here, you can see Makarska, Brela and all the islands in the area. It is a breathtaking view that will leave you speechless.
The history and the view also serve as great inspiration to anyone practicing hill climbing on his/her bike. Imagine telling your friends about cycling through history, all the way back to the 19th century when Napoleon ruled!
